I’m new to blogs, and I don’t really understand what it is about
A blog is in effect an online diary. the aim is to allow you to record your experiences and allow others (such as friends, family and other people who are interested in similar activities) to see what you have been up to, and to benefit from your experiences.
What’s the difference between a “post” and a “page”?
A post is a single blog entry. It relates to a specific time and date. You latest blog entry will show at the top of your homepage. When you publish a new post, this pushes your older posts down your homepage. Posts do not appear in your navigation bar (the blue bar at the top of your screen, on this page it starts with “Home” then “Create your blog now”.
A page represents static content. If you want to have a page that always shows the same content, you should publish a page, rather than a post. Examples of this will normally include content that you think all your visitors will find very interesting, such as a description of who you are, details about your boat, or favourite photo galleries or videos.
What’s this Wordpress stuff about?
Wordpress is an opensource blogs hosting platform. What this means is that is an essentially software product that we use to host your blog. We have made some changes to it, in order to meet the needs of the sailing blogger, however you will find a lot of very useful information about what you can do, and how to do it on the Wordpress.com website.
How easy is it to keep my blog up to date? I don’t know and computer code or anything about writing websites
Very easy! To update your blog you use a very simple visual interface - you don’t need to know anything about code or obscure acronyms (HTML, PHP, CSS etc.). You just need to know how to use a mouse and a keyboard. If you do know how to code, however, you will find you have a significant amount of flexibility in what you can accomplish.
What are plugins?
Plugins are modular bits of computer code, that gives additional new functionality to your website. You can find what plugins you currently have available when you login to your blog, and click on “plugins” in the top right hand corner of your admin interface (you can find your admin interface at [yourdomainname].sailingblogger.com/wp-admin).
I found a plugin I want to use on the internet, but it isn’t available in my plugins page, how can I get this plugin?
We need to ensure the service we offer is stable, and reliable. To do this, we need to test all plugins we install and check for viruses and other nasty code. If you find a plugin you want, please let us know on the forums and we will test this, and assuming it is all good, we will make it available as quickly as we can.
If you cannot find the answer to your question below, you can try looking in the wordpress forums.
